SAUDADE, a fluid longing for the intangible

Saudade is a word that cannot be translated, but can be felt. It refers to an intense, layered longing: a quiet yearning for something or someone who is absent, yet never entirely gone. A feeling that exists between memory and imagination, between what once was and what continues to resonate.

In this exhibition at the Black Swan Gallery in Bruges, the participating artists draw inspiration from Saudade as both an experience and a state of being. From diverse contemporary artistic practices, they explore how time, absence, and longing manifest in images, materials, and spaces. What emerges are works that balance between the tangible and the unspeakable, between presence and absence.

Here, Saudade does not appear as nostalgia, but as an open, poetic space. A place where meaning shifts, slows down, and resists being fixed. The works invite attentive looking and stillness, leaving room for personal resonance and interpretation.
