Maaike Leyn

Maaike Leyn makes charcoal drawings on rough canvas, mostly black & white, not stretched or forced into a frame. The use of her classical technique may be timeless, but she stil uses this material in an unconventional way. With dry pigment she rubs and forces the black and white colour into the fabric which lead to a play of soft and hard stripes and patches. It builds towards a subtle tension between composed and released energy, intuition and play. The canvases are not meant to be joyful, but they possess an intriguing beauty and form a search for the essence .
