Daphne van de Velde
BIOGRAPHY
Daphne van de Velde (1973 ) visualizes, in her art, womanhood in a male-dominated society. The work is a questioning of the photographic medium, an innovative exploration of its possibilities. The work probes the boundary between photography, performance and sculpture.
Daphne’s art is autobiographical. Due to her complicated relationship with her father from whom she became estranged at an early age, desire and threat are a recurring motif in her artistry. With a background in modern dance, she uses her own body to explore how to deal with with fear of one’s own longing and rejection, what love is and why you may distrust it, yet not always. In this way, she has been able to overcome her timidity.
